What is Music Therapy?

Our Music Therapy Services are all about helping you achieve your personal dreams and goals through the power of music. Our Music Therapist will partner with you to assess your aspirations, create a customized support plan, and devise strategies to acquire new skills or improve skills and make your dreams a reality. They’ll also work on enhancing motor, communication, social, emotional, and cognitive/academic skills that matter to you.
Where is it offered?
A Music Therapist works together to support you in a variety of places, including:
  • 1:1’s in your home
  • At a facility partner or day service
  • At an OPG office in one of our music therapy spaces
  • In a music therapy group as you learn new skills
Who is a Music Therapist and what are their qualifications:
Music Therapists complete at least a bachelor’s degree in music therapy from an accredited university program, have completed a 1200-hour internship at an approved internship site, and are nationally board certified through the Certification Board for Music Therapist (CBMT).

Funding Options for this service:

This service is paid for through the Indiana Home and Community Based Services Medicaid Waiver. Private pay options may be available.

If you have a case manager, let them know you want to connect. They will then send a referral for you to OPG or reach out directly.

Find your match:

Once you’ve requested services, an OPG team member will contact you to discuss your needs. They may ask:

  • About you: Age, where you live
  • Health-related: If you have been diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability
  • Preferences: What type of person you would like to work with, what day/time/location you would prefer to meet

The OPG team member will see who is available and can meet your requests.

  • You will then meet and interview your Music
    Therapist.
  • If you both decide it’s a match, an OPG team member will work with you to get everything needed to start services.

Starting Music Therapy Services:

  • Your Music Therapist will schedule a time to meet with you
  • At the start of service and then at least once per year, your Music Therapist will work with you to complete a goals assessment and create a Music Therapy Support Plan
  • Your Music Therapist will be a part of your support team and will attend team meetings and collaborate to help you meet your goals
